LYCEANS’ TRAIL: The Heroes that Work Behind the Scenes
by: Chantel L. Everett , BS Medical Technology
When we hear the word “hero”, the image that would pop in our heads would be superman, batman, iron man, etc. Usually, we associate heroism with flashy costumes and a supernatural being saving a damsel in distress, but, what about the modern-day heroes? When can we say one is a hero though? Well, for me, a modern-day hero is someone who saves lives may it be through providing services to the public or by curing illnesses. But usually, not all heroes get the recognition they deserve because these are the people who work behind the scenes.
Considering the current devastation caused by the COVID-19 and the introduction and adjustment to the new normal, the general public needs these modern-day heroes. Some would think that the doctors are the main heroes in this pandemic but there are also those individuals who put their lives at stake every day just to test and assist the diagnosis of those at risk and those who are infected with COVID-19. These are Medical Technologists whom I consider the dark horses because they may not be seen nor recognized as much but yet they play one of the riskiest and important jobs. In fact, without them, no one would be running the tests needed for diagnosis and we all know how important it is to be getting tested for COVID-19 to stop its spread. These heroes sacrifice their precious time with their loved ones and put their well-being at risk for the benefit of all.
I mean, let us imagine the current world without Medical Technology, doctors would be left clueless on how to diagnose someone with COVID-19 making them extremely essential. It’s just sad to say that they don’t get the recognition they deserve but you know what, some heroes don’t need public recognition, some heroes are contented with having the opportunity to make a difference in other peoples’ lives in their little ways, and in my opinion, that’s what makes Medical Technologists essential heroes of the modern-day battle against COVID-19.
