HISTORY OF LPU DAVAO

Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) was founded in July 7, 1952. Dr. Jose P. Laurel named the school Lyceum of the Philippines after Lykeios, the site in ancient Athens where the great Philosopher Aristotle nurtured the minds of his protegees. The school motto. “Veritas et Fortitudo” (Truth and Fortitude), “Pro Deo et Patria” (For God and Country), reflects Dr. Laurel’s belief in the value of learning and character formation for God and Country.

After Dr. Jose P. Laurel died in 1959, on his third son, Dr. Sotero H. Laurel, who was then in the practice of law, fell the mantle of responsibility of running the school. He was also the one helped his father organized LPU and acted as the first executive secretary to his father.

Senator Sotero H. Laurel believes in the importance of bringing the quality education to provinces thus he founded Lyceum of the Philippines University in Batangas in 1996. With its mission to elevate the standard of education in the country, Lyceum of the Philippines University in Laguna was founded in 2000 and Lyceum of the Philippines University in Cavite in 2008.

The LPU Education System is recognized by various local and international quality assurance bodies. It is granted the Autonomous Status by CHED (Manila and Batangas Campuses) It is also awarded  by the Commission on Higher Education with a number of Centers Excellence: Hotel and Restaurant Management (Manila and Batangas Campuses), Tourism (Manila and Batangas Campuses), Business Administration (Manila Campus). It is also awarded with Centers of Development for Business Administration and Information Technology (Batangas Campus). Majority of its programs are also PACUCUOA accredited.

LPU is also ISO Certified and is a recipient of the Philippine Quality Award for its Commitment to Quality Management (Batangas, Manila, and Laguna Campuses). It is also Asia’s first Investors-in-People Gold Accredited University for its people management practices.

LPU’s most notable Alumnus is no other than President Rodrigo Roa Duterte finished his Bachelor of Arts major in Political Science in LPU Manila in 1968. He was also the recipient LPU’s most Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2015.

Lyceum of the Philippines – Davao opened in July 2019 offering College and Senior  High School Programs. Lyceum of the Philippines Davao (LPU Davao) is located at Km.11 Diversion Road, Buhangin, Davao City. It is a part of a township project which is a mixture of residential and commercial areas with the school at the very heart of it. It aims to deliver the “LPU Lifestyle” where individuals can live a life that leads: Learn, Enjoy, Achieve and Discover.
